The provincial capital is 449 km. from Bangkok, covering an area of 10,886 sq. km., and the fourth largest in the country. In spite of its modern status, Khon Kaen has an interesting history dating back to prehistoric times, as witnessed in the fact that the first dinosaur fossils in Thailand were discovered here.
